Fly Fishing the John Day for Steelhead
Perfect timing on snapping the shot to catch this Steelhead hitting the fly as it touched the water!

Come join us for another fantastic year on the John Day River!

Our Steelhead Day trips are walk and wade access on a huge private ranch or a day float to access some wonderful fly water. Rates are $450.00 per day for two anglers.

If you fly in, schedule your flight for Portland, Oregon on the day before the launch date. Once in Portland you will need to rent a vehicle and meet us in Condon Oregon.  We have two options for accommodations; Motel Condon: 541-384-2181, or the Hotel Condon: 800-201-6706

The run on the John Day doesn't really even start to be fishable until the last week of October. The irrigation makes the water flow on the river get very low by mid October. Irrigation shut off is the 15th of Oct. It takes about a week for the flow to pick up and that brings in a good push of fish. We get very fresh (bright) fish all the way through Feb. November and December are the prime time to fish.

Notes from the field: 2004
October
Late October was perfect again for dry fly Steelhead. The last week of the month 2 anglers rose 16, hooked 7, and landed 4. Not bad for dry flies. Total anglers: 6 Total fish hooked: 17 Total fish landed: 10

November
November like always produced some very fine Steelhead catch rates! Hot flies were comets, crazy charlies, caddis and black leech patterns. Public and private access produced about the same numbers of fish. Total anglers: 39 Total fish hooked: 114 Total fish landed: 67

December
Temperatures stayed perfect again for December. Once again we got that nice late push of bigger bright Steelhead we see every December. As always, fishing with floating lines, we were able to have an epic season ended with the hot fly being the conehead black string leech. Total anglers: 25 Total fish hooked: 91 Total Fish landed: 62   Totals for the season Anglers: 70 Hooked: 222 Landed: 139
